There are five major factors that determine Tulasi’s health: light, water, soil, air, and devotion. Using organic fertilizer maintains a proper soil environment for Tulasi to grow nicely.
Why Fertilizers are Necessary
In nature organic matter like leaves, dead plants, fallen trees, etc, are broken down by worms, bacteria and other organisms which in turn provide nutrients for plants to grow healthy and strong. But when growing plants in pots, there is no external source of nutrients occurring naturally, so we need to use organic fertilizers to replace it.
There is a saying that one should not feed the plant, one should feed the soil. As the plant absorbs nutrients from the soil, the soil needs to be “fed” to allow fungi, bacteria, and other organisms in the soil to live and give nutrients to the plant. This ecosystem in the soil is like the digestive system of a plant, If the soil is not “fed” these organisms will eventually starve and die, thus leaving a weak unhealthy plant without proper nutrition. Without proper nutrition one is much more susceptible to disease and will eventually die. To learn about what soil to use check out this article.
Result of Using Organic Fertilizers
As covered in our article Organic vs Inorganic, following these steps to establish and maintain a healthy soil ecosystem will result in a plant with much more energy, very lush and green leaves, strong aromas from leaves and flowers, as well as strong disease and pest resistance. The difference is astonishing, using organic fertilizer doesn’t take much work and it actually makes growing Tulasi much much easier.
What Fertilizers to Use?
We always recommend using only organic products. The specific products we recommend are:
General Organics Bio Thrive
General Organics Bio Root
General Organics CaMg+
General Organics Bio Weed
If these fertilizers are not available in your area, try looking for an organic 4-3-3 fertilizer as well as a calcium and magnesium supplemental fertilizer (which are common deficiencies for Tulasi plants). Another option is to make your own. We have a guide on how to make your own traditional cow dung tea fertilizer for Tulasi plants. This will work just as well as the store bought fertilizers. The tea lacks calcium and magnesium, we therefore recommend using General Organics CaMg+ or some other calcium and magnesium supplemental fertilizer in addition to the tea. Follow our guide to learn all about it.
How to Use Organic Fertilizers
If you’re using store bought fertilizers, simply follow the instructions on the label when watering Tulasi. The manufacturers have already done all the complicated work for us, so we can just follow their instructions. If you’re using cow dung tea, follow our guide. For more info on watering Tulasi check out this article.

Thank you for the recommendation of suitable fertilizers. Unfortunately for me, General Organics doesn’t seem to be available in my country. Do you know of any alternative that you could suggest?
Thanks!
Maximilian
The only other brand besides General Organics we’ve used is BioBizz. But generally any line of vegan organic fertilizers should work.
Thank you for sharing good advice
